Strategy for integration of European Muslims

How can Muslims integrate into the wider population of Europe? This is a key point made by governments that Islam must address. Clearly this must be achieved at different levels. Muslims should not see integration as assimilation, that is having one’s culture pillaged as happened to the former slaves of the British Empire. Rather Muslims must see integration as getting power and influence in Europe. If one is integrated into the community, that is you have many links with it and have done good to help it then you will have support from it. You will be protected and safe. Relations will be good. So how can we integrate? The simple answer is to do good for the community at large, both Muslim and non-Muslim. Muslim organisations must set up and coordinate quality services that leverage and develop the skills of Muslims, particularly the youth and then put them to work in the community. The youth could learn DIY skills and help old people improve their homes, doing odd jobs for them. Many people in the UK live in substandard housing as the charity Shelter has argued. Muslims could go out and help people improve their standard of living. Some Muslims are knowledgeable and so these people could give a few hours a week manning advice helplines on various issues and problems. There are many ideas that Muslims could use to repair their embattled reputation. Look at what charities do and copy their activities. The key is to become a valuable and indispensable part of Europe. In this way we can generate support for ourselves and ultimately power as well as reducing extremism through keeping the youth busy in helping people rather than trying to kill them.
